The Daily Post: The Most Important Thing

January 19, 2011

Daily Post

I have been a student of Native American teachings for many moons now. I have participated in and conducted many sweat [purification] ceremonies and have a developed a sense of balance in my life based on the teachings of my elders.

When I thought about the daily post assignment–what is the important thing, a lot of things came to me. Could it be balance, could it be humility, could it be love, could it be family, or our teachings. But one thing kept coming back.

It was the Tree of Life [ Cha Wakan ]

Many Native American and some Pagan religions talk about the Tree of Life. In Norse mythology and religion the Tree of Life is said to be the harborer of three distinct worlds. I am sure you know that story.

In Native American customs the Tree of Life represents something different:

The Tree of Life is the archetype of all spiritual knowledge. The trunk forms branches, and the branches form leaves. Humans are like the leaves–we reach a certain ripeness and the time comes to go into the spirit world. Our bodies drop to the earth like leaves of the tree.

In me, all life is one; There is no demarcation of “other.” The nuances of vision may very, yet the essential sap is nowhere separated, and is, in itself, exhilaration.

I am the bearer of this knowledge, this understanding, this experience of grace. However you may insist on believing you are apart from that which is in you, that which surrounds you, the law which is ALL will bring you to me, to union and communion
