Fortos Fort: New Roof Project

June 28, 2011

Alaska, Daily Post

Well we are knee deep and 40 feet in the air on the new roof project at Forto’s Fort. We worked for the last several days and can confidently say that we are well over the halfway mark.

It is good that my son, Tyler, is up in Alaska now and he has been a big help as the groundman the first day and even got a promotion today was scaling the very steep pitch of the roof. Today he was wielding the nail gun and scurrying up the roof jacks like a squirrel on a hot tin roof!

The cabin was built in the mid to late 1970’s and pretty much started as a one floor structure with a large open loft.

Over the years a large front room was added, that I now use as an office and a studio for my Internet radio show. And, upstairs the loft was enclosed and several dormers were added to give the roof a bunch of crazy angles.

This past weekend Tyler and I spent a better part of 20 hours painting all the trim and fascia red. It really changes the whole look of the house.

I figure we have about 3 or 4 more days and the steepest parts are still to come–as long as the rains stay away. But who could beat working in the outdoors on beautiful 60 degree days up here in the Great White North? Sure beats tarring a roof at Shawshank in the 100 degree heat in the middle of summer for a bunch of screws!

Slowly but surely our little cabin is becoming a home. The next step is to get the girls (my wife, Michele and daughter, Nicole) up here for good too!
