31 Days of Horror, Robert Forto

Every year we have a tradition in the Forto house where we celebrate the greatest month of the year, October, with scare your socks off, hide under the covers, turn on all the lights, sleep with one eye open, fright fest, movie marathon every night of the month! We call it 31 Days of Horror.

31 Days of Horror: Night of the Living Dead

Day 19 Movie: Night of the LIving Dead (1968)

A love George A. Romero’s work. He is the King of the Zombie movies taking the franchise from Night of the Living Dead a full 24-hour circle with Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and so on…

I think my favorite ‘Dead’ series movie though had to be Dawn of the Dead and the infamous shopping mall. It was an 1980’s movie all the way. If you remember that is where everybody used to hang out: The Mall !

Frequently Asked Question

Q: What causes the dead to reanimate?

A: Romero gives us no definite answer in this movie or its sequels. In interviews he tells us that he doesn’t even know the answer. Enthusiasts still have their theories, three of which are 1) Radiation from satellites reactivates the brains of recently dead corpses. This is the theory of the film’s characters, specifically those featured on the news programs, though that hardly settles the matter, 2) God made it happen to punish us. Supporters of this theory give us Peter’s statement in Dawn of the Dead, the first sequel: “When there’s no room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth”, and 3) Some kind of virus has caused it. The evidence is that the dead infect the living whenever they bite them

Fun Facts:

The word “zombie” is never used. The most common euphemism used to describe the living dead is “those things,” mostly by Cooper

In the opening scene, Johnny tells Barbra that they have a “three-hour drive” ahead of them to return home to Pittsburgh. However, later in the film when the TV broadcast is listing local rescue stations, all of the town names given are located in the greater Pittsburgh area.

When Ben tackles the second zombie by the truck, he pins it to the ground right underneath him and starts beating it with a tire iron. You can see that to avoid actor injury, Ben is hammering the zombie at least 5 inches away from the zombie’s head.

Plot: The radiation from a fallen satellite might have caused the recently deceased to rise from the grave and seek the living to use as food. This is the situation that a group of people penned up in an old farmhouse must deal with.
